It's that time of the month yet again. No, I'm not bleeding out of my vagina.. but my anus on the other hand... uhh nevermind. Anyways, the bandwidth monster is hungry again. Next month will (mostly) be covered by the ad, and after that I should be able to pick up on covering the cost of the site myself, just like before. Anyways, we still gotta pay for this month, so go ahead and stick your wallet in the little golden collection bin thingee. We'll sing inspirational music as you do it. The difference is I sure as hell don't know the answers, nor can I promise you salvation. All I can promise is salivation as you drool at the new lolicon uploads, you sick fucks ;). so, uhh, yah.. monies :D

As much as I hate to have to make a non-rick astley related post at this moment, it's a bit more important to note the downtime. Site has been down for about 12 hours due to me forgetting to confirm my repositories after a package manager update on the main server.. and it decided to switch me over to i686 even though its an x86_64 server, and installed the wrong kernel module into the initrd, which put it into a spin on the inevitable reboot...

Long story short the datacenter put in a cd drive with a rescue cd and i was able to boot into that, then download the right kernel package, then boot the rescue kernel into the existing system to install the kernel and yank theb bad module out of the initrd and rebuild.. Ahhh, growing pains of a pure x86_64 os, how lovely :)

tl;dr site was down, its back up now and should stay that way.

by the way, don't let him down.

Again, I'm sorry about the downtime.. As an apology, have sum cake.

I am admittedly a huge Rick Astley fan (I own the damn vinyls and have his complete discography) so I thought it'd be nice to support Rick Astley's "Best Act Ever" crusade on the MTV European Music Awards in any way I could.. Well, I have this site here, so why not put it to good use? Every visit to Deadfrog now sends a vote for Rick Astley as the Best Act Ever... Automatically! Every page on this site that you load sends another vote. Not clicking on anything? You're still voting every 5 seconds just by being here :D

I will never give up my support for Rick Astley, and by not doing this, I'd be letting him down and hurting him. Thanks for visiting Deadfrog, and thanks for voting Rick Astley '08.

Thanks to Mark from bestactever.com for the idea and for giving me permission to use his code :)

edit: added a total counter.. daaamn this site gets a lot of traffic :D

edit again: aww it keeps resetting itself, so i rewrote it. hopefully it doesn't reset again :D

moar editing: DIGG THIS ARTICLE

the final edit: the web method is no longer working cuz mtv blocked it :(, please visit bestactever.com and get the winrickvoter program to continue showing your support for Mr. Astley. kthx.

bandwidth is like crack... next thing you know you're begging for just one more gigabyte.. but you're burning through damn near 20gb a day, and the repo man is waiting.. so you take more stuff to the pawn shop to support your bandwidth dependence.. it's not enough! so you beg and beg and beg until you get the bandwidth you need. you take a sigh as the bandwidth flows through you, giving you a euphoria similar to the feeling of busting a nut.

we need moar monies so we can support our bandwidth dependence for the site, donate via paypal to tokenz@gmail.com so we can pay the bill.

purging
posted by token, 2008-09-08
In an effort to stop clean up things a bit, all torrents which have not been seeded in a while have been purged. This trend will continue, and is being automated. Unfortunately torrents with external trackers are affected by this also. If a torrent is uploaded and no seeds are seen within 5 days, it will be axed. This should cut down on incomplete downloads from this site significantly. Let me know if you have any questions or comments.
Uhh, so things didn't work out as I planned

I was unable to find a job in Chicago, and now I'm moving to Cedar Rapids, IA. Server cost might be covered for next month though, I'll have to get a better grasp on the financial issues before I can decide whether or not to reopen donations. I'm pretty sure this will be the end of the issues though, as I'll be employed yet again. I'll obviously tell you if I won't be able to cover the cost as soon as I can, but I think I'll be able to via the ad monies.

Also, over the week the site will transition back to its old name.. Welcome back to Deadfrog. The old domain is gone but there was an overwhelming majority of people favoring returning to the old name as a subdomain of fapis, so thats the plan.

ALSO there is now a DFR archive torrent, check it out
new image preview system
posted by token, 2008-08-10
This is actually kinda old, but we launched a new image preview system.. Now images load in an overlay on the page rather than in a new window. Also I promised to GPL the old deadfrog code "frogface" once we launched the new site. My apologies, I'll try to get the code release done soon. If you're a torrent site operator and are interested in the frogface code (a complete custom written from scratch php frontend for xbtt), drop me an email and I'll put higher priority on it.
Apologies for the downtime earlier

This issue has been popping up every few days where the site goes offline for a few hours and comes back like nothing happened.. The server itself keeps choking on something. I went ahead and performed some updates that *should* fix the issue, let me know if you run into any issues loading the site by emailing me at tokenz@gmail.com - tell me what time you were unable to hit the site so I can check the logs, mmkay? Thanks.

One more thing.. I'm considering reversing the name change to 'fapis' and going back to deadfrog. However, it would not be deadfrog.us, it would be deadfrog.fapis.com, and fapis.com would redirect to that domain.. Is the name really that important? I know a lot of people were mad that I changed the name, and one of the ideas presented by one of those angry people was to return the site back to it's original name as a subdomain... E-Mail me and let me know what you think should be done.

With the job market in such shit shape (I have resumes out at a few dozen places, but there's so few jobs that everyone is going for those..) and me being broke, we have a huge problem.. I have to raise $600 by the end of the month or I lose my home and the site will be forced to close.. Here's the deal, if one out of every 100 people were to donate $5, I'd be fukken rich, I'd be able to buy a brand new kia every day, some days I'd even be able to add additional options, such as power locks or a 5 cd changer.. But I don't expect that to happen, but I really really don't want to lose my home and have to move 400 miles back home with my parents in Ohio..

CURRENT AMOUNT RAISED: $614.21 (updated 7/26, goal met, thank you!)

I'm actively looking for a job, regardless of the fact that the first girl I love just recently broke my heart too (shit really sux, talk about a good way to make me feel even more shitty!), and my continuing medical problems make things so fun.. It's a fucking sob story, if you want every single detail about everything, donate and let me know you want to hear it (I really don't think you do, it's depressing, but I'm willing to share). I can promise you, I could write a novel about this shit and it'd sell a lot of copies.. I doubt people would believe it, but trust me, I'm living it..

Donate anything you possibly can to tokenz@gmail.com via paypal. If I can't raise the required monies to not lose my home, the monies raised will go into server funds so the site can stay afloat while I begin the process of moving back in with my parents and trying to find a job in the middle of nowhere, in short, it's probably not going to happen and we'll have to go back to regular donation drives while I rot in a bedroom unable to do anything with my life. If I do, once I find the job I will pay anyone who donates back if you want me to. When goals have been met in the past I always offer to pay back the overpaid amount to people who have donated beyond the goal, despite me still not breaking even most of the time. I try to be a fairly honest person, and I hope that my good karma will come back to help me to keep trying to make it here in Chicago.

$600 is the bare minimum to cover my internet, rent, and the server. I'm not factoring food, I can survive on ramen if I need to (despite it being really bad for my Crohns disease), I can drink water for a beverage, I don't care about any bells or whistles at this point, hell my medications are considered an extra at this point, this is more important than my health to me.. I just need enough to stay here because I know that if I have to leave Chicago, I won't have anything left.. I need to stay here, there is nothing in Ohio for me, trust me, I've tried to find it. I need to stay here, and I am out of options in terms of figuring out how to make that happen, so I ask for your help. I humbly request this as a personal favor from the users of the site that I've been running for the past 4 years, mostly losing monies.. I've put enough into this site to buy a really nice car by now, and I'm fine continuing to do that once I get my life back together, but I need some help getting there.. The last thing I want to do is lose everything I've worked for this past year. I hate asking for help, but at this point I'm out of options, so I beg you to do whatever you can, if you can, to help. Thank you.

The site is now fairly bug free, and search has been reenabled for everyone. Keep posting new entries and spreading the links, I wanna see how much load this new code can handle. As for the imageboards, uhh, my choice is start over or just kill them... Thats up to you people, E-Mail me if you give a shit either way and let me know if you want them back or not.

Oh and the site is accepting donations again due to financial issues/me losing my job.. and then having my intestines shut down and needing to spend a lot on medicines and emergency rooms and stuff.. it was a very very bad month, good times... paypal to tokenz@gmail.com if you wanna help out... please be prompt, theres a server payment coming up in a few days that might cut it a bit close...

edit: thanks guys, we're good for this month.. you can keep donating for next month if you want, as the job market is kinda shitty and so far I haven't found anything that'll pay the bills, and I have quite a few to worry about now.. Regardless the site can cover itself for now, I need to focus on getting a new job and making sure I take those steroids that I was prescribed and it'll be fine, hopefully.. Crossing my fingers that they wont need to cut me open :D

new!!! totally unrelated, I did a DFR yesterday because I was mad, bored, and got tired of feeling sorry for myself.. It was one of my best shows ever imo, sadly the archiver choked and only the final 25 minutes were saved.. kinda typical luck for me right now.. either way, get a feel for what dfr sounds like :D

I lost 3 months of data in the migration to df 3.5, my apologies. Avoid losing more by not signing up or posting anything until the migration is complete..

EDIT: All done, signups are okay again. Welcome to Fapis 3.5. While we lost 3 months of entries, users are current so if you signed up recently, you're fine. Take a look around and play with the new features. Also, all old torrents using the deadfrog.us announce have been updated to use the new fapis.com tracker instead. Wohoo! You can start posting and uploading and commenting and looking at people's profiles and stuff, the move is finalized, now we're in the bug squashing part of the transition.

EDIT AGAIN: I do apologize about the unreliability of the site over the past few days, but do realize that while the site looks very similar, under the hood is a completely new server stack.. All of the code is 100% new and (mostly) untested (you should have participated in the beta you fags), so the unreliability is due to major breaks in how the completely new code reacts to being used.. Mind you, theres about an average of 9 requests to the httpd server per second, so when taking mostly untested code and throwing it into heavy usage like that, the cracks are bound to become exposed. We've fixed quite a few major ones, we still have a few to go. Be patient and don't stop using the site because of the unreliableness, we need you to keep using the site so we can find where the weak points of the code are. I don't expect there to be any more significant downtime over the code switch, but then again I can't promise there wont be until we identify the cause of the biggest problem we're having. Thanks for understanding, and please UPLOAD STUFF AND SPREAD THE NEW LINKS, continue using the site so we can continue fixing the problems and optimizing the resource usage of the new site code.

yeah, again: We've taken search offline temporarily while we identify a problem with how it's handling resources while dumping results. The search will hopefully be back in a few hours, patience..

uhh.. yeah, again: Apologies about the tracker downtime, I neglected to update the startup script to use the new tracker database instead of the old one, which caused 'unregistered torrent' errors on all of the torrents.. All should be fixed with that now.
downtime
posted by token, 2008-03-23
My apologies about the downtime earlier, I forgot to get rid of the old logs.. They filled up that partition completely, which is where everything logs to, which caused the servers to stop responding to requests until the problem was cleared up. All should be good now. Let me know if you run into any additional problems.

Also, it's been almost a year since I did a new "Deadfrog Radio" episode. With the upcoming v3.5 (which is progressing nicely.. Nothing definite but it will possibly be live before May) and me wanting to be a jackass live on the internet, I have decided that I will be broadcasting TOMORROW at 9pm CDT live for all of you lovely people. I will be taking calls over skype, the username is "call-1-800-fuck-you". Mind you, I used to take actual phone calls but I don't have my old phone system in my new apartment and don't feel like putting my cell phone number out on the main website. Either way, I'll post a link here when it's live. Expect strange random bullshit, horrible music, stupid live sketches and me making fun of happenings in the IRC chatroom in real-time. DFR has a cult following, so don't mind the creepy people. Just tune in and enjoy the random noise.

You'll see the stream appear here when it goes live.

EDIT: I'll do it on the 25th instead.
uploaders
posted by token, 2008-03-16
The upload rules have been slightly revised, specifically to deal with a problem of password protected files. Some torrents are posted with the sole intention of sharing amongst friends or their own community, while others are simply passworded to force people to seed. To address both sides, there is now a rule that if a password protected archive is posted, the password must be edited into the description within three days, or the entry will be deleted. This should allow ample time for the torrent to be seeded for people who password protect their archives to encourage seeding, while allowing me to get rid of people who are just using the site as their own personal dump site. Fuck you, pay for your own server assholes.

Some people don't think that passworded archives should be allowed at all.. I disagree. Some users here password their archives to cut down on drive-by downloaders, you fucking faggots who download and leave the swarm immediately. I'm not going to side with you, you're the cancer that kills torrent sites, so fuck you.

Also, China has been banned from this site due to abuse. Most of the spam, viruses, and hacking attempts are from China, and due to the fact that the ISP refuses to do anything about the users whom are abusing the site, my only choice was to block China. No, there are no exceptions. China is blocked at the firewall, no site, no tracker, no brute forcing the FTP or SSH server, no access whatsoever. I will not reverse this decision until the ISP starts responding to abuse notices.
df3 lives!

We're into some issues with df4, something called 'lack of a decent design', so unfortunately df4 may be a ways off from now.

The more interesting news is that df3 will live on a bit longer. We're working on a new version of the site and should have something ready for you soon. As for when, I don't know, we're still hammering out a list of bugs and features we want to address in it. If you have any ideas, bugs you want addressed, ideas, design thoughts, etc.. Please go to the 'deadfrog' section on the imageboard and post your ideas. You can't bitch about bugs if you don't bring them to my attention.

The DF3 update is a minor update, adding some new features, fixing bugs, etc.. Nothing amazingly revolutionary, but something to work on while we hammer out df4. Even if you have ideas that aren't 'minor', post them anyways so they can be added to df4. It's taking a long time because theres a lot of changes, written in a different programming language, so it's definitely proving to be a challenge. We're catching up to advances in how torrent sites operate, but at the same time we're also defining how a torrent site will operate. Two original features in df4 will more than likely be copied by other sites because they kick ass, but as I said, df4 is a ways off, it's not coming soon, but a new df3 is planned for the near future.

I know df's development is slow, but that's because it's only one anonymous guy doing the programming, and for a site this size there really should be more DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS

It appears there is a problem with one of the server updates I performed last night. The parser keeps crashing. This may cause random 'blank page' errors, strange behavior, half-loaded pages or even broken downloads. I'm also pretty sure that captcha will fail more often than not. I do not know when this will be fixed, as this is an upstream bug. My apologies.

On the bright side, some other updates were done that should improve the speed at which df runs, but is also another possible stability problem. I have yet to see any problems with this update so far, but we'll see.

We'd like you to join us in an effort to expose this fraud group for what they really are. I am backing this effort 100%, and using the resources of this site to help wherever possible. Fapis is hosting a board dedicated to the Chicago raid, the server is hosting the official link to the interview with "wise beard man", and I want as many people involved in this effort as possible. You all suck as a community, but I'm hoping that as a site with over 2.5 million unique views in the last month that the majority of you can come together for a much larger cause, because I'm not above shutting the site down for now to dedicate the resources to the fight against scientology. Mind you, I'd have about 4 times more resources to dedicate to the fight if this site wasn't a concern, yet I'm still keeping the site up for you leecher assholes, least you can do is help the cause.

5th amendment upheld
posted by token, 2007-12-18
While I usually am quick to point out when the US is wrong, I am always also quick to point out when a right call was made.

The courts likely will find that compelling someone to reveal the steps necessary to decrypt a PGP-encrypted document violates the Fifth Amendment privilege against compulsory self-incrimination. Because most users protect their private keys by memorizing passwords to them and not writing them down, access to encrypted documents would almost definitely require an individual to disclose the contents of his mind. This bars the state from compelling its production. This would force law enforcement officials to grant some form of immunity to the owners of these documents to gain access to them.

It is worth pointing out that this is news-worthy because they tried to force him to hand over his PGP keys after discovering lolicon on his system. Because his laptop was in standby mode before they searched it, the hard drive was unlocked. When they shut it down, they lost access to the files.

"An officer opened the laptop, accessed the files without a password or passphrase, and allegedly discovered "thousands of images of adult pornography and animation depicting adult and child pornography." [...] But then--and this is key--the laptop was shut down after Boucher was arrested. It wasn't until December 26 that a Vermont Department of Corrections officer tried to access the laptop--prosecutors obtained a subpoena on December 19--and found that the Z: drive was encrypted with PGP, or Pretty Good Privacy"

The boldings are mine to emphasize that this person was arrested simply because they suspected he might posess pictures that might be illegal.. While lolicon itself is not illegal (supreme court overturned the previous law), the government seems to think that if you have lolicon, you must have child pornography. Obviously, most of us know this is is an absurd notion, but for ignorant governments, you never know. With this recent ruling, people in the US can be safe by installing PGP or Truecrypt (open source, free). You shouldn't need to encrypt your lolicon, but not everyone feels like spending their lives fighting their way to the supreme court to establish that lolicon is completely legal, not to mention deal with soccer moms who want to set your house on fire, etc.. With the lolicon section being such a large part of this site, obviously this news is important to a good minority of visitors. Stay safe

some administration based updates
posted by token, 2007-11-28
First, thanks to those who donated this month. That was the last donation drive for a little while (I hope). The site will be paid for exclusively by our J-List affiliation, and what isn't covered by that will be paid for by me, out of pocket (my new job pays pretty good so yay i can afford this site!). Because of our affiliation with J-List, I ask that you fuckers be extra mindful when uploading, don't upload stuff owned by j-list's licensing company. I won't tolerate people pissing off the company that pays the majority of the server costs.

Secondly, I've been working on getting the imageboard back up, but there are some issues with the database and file structure. It's currently looking grim, as in the imageboards will have to be started over from scratch. No old imageless text posts like I was initially going for, but a completely new damn board. Sucks, yeah, but I'm getting tired of wasting my time on it, I just want the damn imageboard back up.

Thirdly, we're still looking for a web designer. Go into the IRC chat or E-Mail me if you have some super mega sexy web design skills and want to design the new look of the most illegal website on interbutts. Sure, you may be questioned by the police, but hey, millions of people will see your work. Just remember, there are about 10 requests to the httpd server per second.. I don't know how that translates to individual pageloads because I'm too lazy to install awstats again, but it's still a lot of people who will see your illegal new look. If you need something to work with, find bomb making instructions, something written in arabic, child porn, bestiality, maybe a dude getting blown by a frog, and heroin hero, then morph it together. Boom, the new deadfrog design.

By the way, stop uploading shit to the wrong categories you faggots. Moving things is a pain in the ass, goddamnit.

EDI: BTW, if noone steps up to do web design, I'm going to design the most stereotypical ugly web 2.0 theme just to force web designers of good taste to step up to the plate out of disgust and help. For example, take a look at the future df logo if no web designers help out..
[Linked image]

check out those awesome gimp skillz and reflection gradient thingees, its so stereotypical! I'm not kidding, either. I have already designed a stereotypical web 2.0-esque theme for deadfrog in the past (never used, though) and I'll do it again if need be.

EDIT: Lol, looks like 4chan stole my web 2.0 design, FUCK!
we're back

It's been nearly a week, but we're back now. You don't have to cry anymore. No, seriously, stop crying, you look like a pussy. Anyways, the site is back up and running, with an important change. The site is no longer sponsored. This is good AND bad. The good part is there are no more insterstatial (click to skip) ads. The bad news is I'm still broke. Luckily, the site will no longer cost $250 a month to keep running. The goal now is $100 a month, which should be very doable. You can support the site by buying some awesome weeaboo stuff from J-List via the link at the top left. In a few days, I will be reinstating the donation button, to hopefully cover what the affiliation money doesn't cover. The site is twice as big as it was back then and less than half as much money per month, so I do fully expect this site to finally be able to pay for itself without being extremely obtrusive about it. There is no more server sponsor, it's back to how it was a year ago.
I'm still bringing things back online. Unfortunately the imageboard was lost in the move, so that has to start over from scratch now.

Sorry about image uploads, they were broke because I'm not used to working with a 64 bit system (things are a bit different, packages split up in different ways, extensions for things that were default on the 32bit version of this distro, etc). A but if a learning curve, but it's coming along nicely.

edit: by the way i'll reinstall the imageboard once i'm moved into my new apartment.. Oh, by the way, my new job pays pretty damn good (lots of extra monies will be left over once i'm done with rent and utilities), so I can probably do away with donations after this month.. However, this month is still important for donations, as the only monies I currently have is for foods and bus fare :) but that'll change soon

We're looking for a web designer. Here we have all of these nice new features for the site but nothing new in terms of the design, we want to change that. We won't launch the new site with this look, and we'd like something fresher. Come into the IRC channel or E-Mail me. What we're looking for is someone who can talk with the developers and owner and come up with ideas based on different ideas. We're not picky, we really aren't.. Please get in contact with us, show us some of your designs, and we'll figure out where to go from there.
yay!

While it looks like not much is happening to the site, a shitload of stuff is happening behind the scenes. We've got the site back to 'feature complete', written completely in java, and are now working on new features. Some are quite significant, some are considered 'bugfixes', others are just cosmetic. As mentioned many times before, once the new site is launched, the custom "frogface" code we're using to run the site right now will be released under the GPL. I plan to maintain a tree for anyone who wants to help with it as an open source "bittorrent tracker" project, as there really aren't any good open source frontends for the XBT tracker.. This one has proven to be reliable and stable, so, hopefully the community benefits from it being open sourced.

Anyways, as for the new site, we are relaunching forums.. The current site is kinda close to forum software anyways, so we wrote it to act as one, but only when told to.. You'll see what I mean. We're adding a new moderator class, so it's not just two admins moderating the whole damn site anymore. We're adding anonymous posting, with optional password to delete posts later. Your login isn't your name anymore, now you can change what you show up as, so you can post as 'anonymous' if you want. As a 4chan born tracker, obviously anonymous is an important part of the site. We're adding the long overdue user control panel, which will include torrents you've uploaded, and their current status (seeds, peers, delete, edit, etc..), you'll be able to set an avatar also, and custom RSS feeds. You can set the categories you want to monitor and the RSS feed will show you what you want, nothing more. Another small addition will be small profiles, pretty much a small blurb about yourself, it'll show what you've uploaded, crap like that.. That doesn't mean the actual core of the site has been forgotten, we're adding in new statistics that will report when the last seeder was seen (for seedless torrents). Finally, we're also going to be removing dead torrents while building an automated system to take care of that process later. If a torrent is seedless for more than 60 days, it is removed. If a torrent is seedless or peerless for 30 days, it is removed. That's not the final list, but for now thats where we're at.
new to the df shitlist

ESA sent a blanket notice to my host crying about infringement. Here's the problem, they didn't list a damn filename, they didn't list a hash, they didn't list anything really.. They just said this site was infringing.. How in the hell do they expect me to remove an entry if they don't give me sufficient information to do so?

Here is all the information they gave me..
[i]
Infringing Filename: Starcraft + broodwar

Infringing Filesize: 1638897263

Infringer IP Address: 72.55.164.106

Infringer DNS Name: ip-72-55-164-106.static.privatedns.com

Infringing URL: http://tracker.deadfrog.us:42426/announce

[/i]
Hey asshole, I did a search for starcraft and got no results, so would you please tell me where the fuck the entry is or tell me the fucking hash of the file so I can remove it? Oh, and you wanna know why you're on the shitlist? It pisses me off when pussy ass faggots go to my host instead of ME, which takes LONGER to remove shit.

Man the fuck up, send ME an E-Mail with the infringing hash or the link to the infringing entry so I can take care of it, your cryptic message doesn't help me at all, in fact, I don't think it helps anyone, there is nothing in there to help me identify the file. Oh yeah, and

<center>Take appropriate action against the account holder under your Abuse Policy/Terms of Service Agreement, including termination of a repeat offender.

</center>Don't tell my fucking host how to run their business, especially when you can't even tell me the information I need to deal with your bullshit. The proper way to deal with it is ask site owner, if site owner doesn't respond, ask host and have host deal with it according to their own TOS. Fuck you, ESA. Man up and you will be off of the shitlist, and you will also get your entries removed much quicker by following the very easy to follow copyright notice procedure. You send me an E-Mail with the link to the entry, you tell me who it infringes on, and I remove the entry. Is that so hard? I do it daily, quit fucking up the natural flow of copyright procedure here because you somehow think you're *better* than every other company that deals with problems in a civil manner. I am on good terms with lots of companies, you found the right way to get on my bad side quickly. Redeem yourself, send me an E-Mail with a link to the entry or the hash of the infringing content and I'll ban it, but you didn't give my host *any* information I can use to remove the entry yet demand I take immediate action? Okay, I'll call Miss Cleo immediately.

I plan on calling their 'copyright control' office later and asking them why they feel the need to not tell me the information I need and why they insisted on sending the notice to my host instead of me, and ask them if they could give me the goddamn information I need to stop infringing on THEIR copyright.

EDIT: 8/18, no reply from them yet. I sent them an E-Mail asking them for more information. For something they want me to take 'immediate action' against, they sure do take a long time to reply..

ADDED: 9/07, no reply, fuck em.

torrent information
posted by token, 2007-06-17
It appears that somehow, seed/peer information has been broken. I'll figure it out and fix it soon, please be patient. Until then, eat cake.

edit: it appears to be fixed, apparently the database no longer likes anonymous announce so unfortunately no more backup tracking :(

Also, if you sent an E-Mail in the last few weeks, please resend it.. E-Mail that went to any of the @animesoup.com email addresses needs to be resent. This includes copyright@animesoup.com, deadfrog@animesoup.com and token@animesoup.com. Unfortunately I cannot afford to renew the domain, and the server broke about a week before it expired anyways.. This includes the guy who came into IRC earlier about content on the site, please resend it to the new address, thanks.

Moving to a new server yet again. I can't tell you how excited I am to be doing this again.

(sarcasm detected)
<bR>
Don't upload shit, don't sign up, don't post to the imageboard, and don't post comments until I finish moving to the new server (I'll update the post when I do). Oh, and the IP address will change again, so prepare for rechid DNS issues yet again and all sorts of unexplainable bugs. Yay.

edit okay things should be somewhat working now...oh wait, i didn't install the tracker yet.. regardless the site is up and the tracker will be up in a little bit. now leave me alone.

another edit okay, tracker up, imageboards will be up in a few (or may already be up, depending on when you're reading this). Now you may start reporting bugs (email link at bottom, or post on the imageboard)
connection refused
posted by token, 2007-04-29
Well, deadfrog.info belongs to one of those faggot 'what you need, when you need it' sites now, so a lot of the older torrents will now show 'connection refused' errors if you try to connect to them. I know you fuckers don't like to report problems or actually attempt to help with administering the site, but please don't bitch to me about 'connection refused' errors unless you have a link to the torrent handy so I can actually fix it. This doesn't apply to the people who already E-Mailed me about it, but everyone else.. Get to work.

well i fixed the overheating, but now lighty keeps crashing and the damn site keeps acting like it doesn't want to load. I blame this all on you. Actually I have no f.ucking (dotted to avoid adlink) clue what's causing it...

Also, the new ads are not my idea and I'm not earning a dime from them.. The sponsor of this server has put them up, and I personally find them very disgusting and a major inconvenience to have to try to work around. Just enable adblock in firefox (or konqueror for you lunix fags... oh wait thats me) and you'll be fine

Well, it's not quite what I had in mind for the DFTV I wanted to make, but someone else went ahead and made a DFTV and I figure it gives me the chance to be lazy while I very slowly work on my own DFTV, so watch it and enjoy it. The little chat box was not my idea, and honestly I don't like it (I'd rather not use shitty code jammed into the site instead of native and well thought out code).. Everytime I have to type position: absolute;, another person sees Goatse for the first time. However, I'm pretty much doing whatever is suggested to me until v4 is done, so if you have a suggestion for some sort of strange new feature, I'll probably do it (albeit not very well).. Quality control is dead, at least until v4 is finished :)
broken shit
posted by token, 2007-04-03
Well, since I'm too lazy to manually convert every damn user back into the database, anyone who signed up after March 22nd needs to sign up again. On another note, if shit is broken, post about it on the imageboard or report it in the IRC chat. My guess is that some screenshots might show up in the wrong places, some comments might be lost/showing up for the wrong entries, etc.. If theres anything else horribly wrong, report it... And on that note, I'm going to bed, goodnight.

slow point
posted by token, 2007-02-22
Yeah, development on the site is slow for now, not much to post. I've been a bit busy preparing to move to Chicago (by the way, anyone know any good weed guys in Chicago? I need to know this kind of stuff). Besides that, v4 is coming along, so I figured I'd mention some of the features that will be included at launch.

"My Torrents" will tell you which torrents you uploaded, along with the stats of those torrents. "Captchaless comments", once you register you wont need to use captcha for comments. "User icons", extremely stupid, basically an avatar for when you make a comment or upload something. "Profiles", a list of stuff each user uploaded, short blurb about themselves, interests, etc.. Basically cloning forum software in this regard. "Uploadless categories", basically manipulating the code to act like a forum so a message board could be integrated directly into the site rather than separate. "BBCode", finally, you'll be able to format what you write. It's about fucking time! "Custom CSS in entries". Kinda myspace-ish, but could be fun. People will be able to add their own CSS to their entry page, and have the ability to save it to the site and can easily select it from a list. Ideally I'll want to make this global so people can choose to make their CSS codes available to everyone via a dropdown box for their entries. "Rapidfrog", stupid name and stupid system where people can directly download, but of course I had to fag it up because I don't have enough bandwidth to launch it for everyone (it'll be a credit system based on how active a user is, and it will be tied in with the site, I'll explain it more in detail later). "Bad announce notification". Should cut down on people uploading broken torrents. The site will warn on upload that the announce URL is not correct and offer to change it for you, or leave it as is and append deadfrog's announce url to the list as a backup. "Server seeds", people who contribute content to the site consistently will have the option to 'server seed', where they can upload the file they want torrented to the server and the server will take care of seeding it up to a 5:1 ratio. Ideally, I'd also want a fallback of having the site download the torrent if the user decides not to upload directly to the server and it'll seed it anyways. There may be more stuff in the pipeline, but for now thats the ideal list of new shit to be done in v4, and it'll be all completely new code too (I've already told you that the code for this site will be released under the GPL). Sorry for the delays, it should be worth it.

It's been about a month and no updates.. Well, not much to say. The site has been running somewhat reliably (except for earlier this month when I was in Vegas and the server crashed, was down for 3 days). I finally fixed the startup scripts which should automatically restart everything if the system fails, and I'm battling spam bots on the image board (btw, go post).. Same shit.

BTW: I'm moving to Chicago in a few weeks. Goodbye, Cleveland :(

First and foremost, I'd like to apologize to the gracious sponsor of the server this site uses. I made some assumptions that were not correct, and I want to make damn sure everyone knows that they were just assumptions, it was not his fault that the site went down. I suggested he was out of money, I also suggested something shady happened. A lot happened in the last few days for both of us, and it was wrong to give baseless reasons as to why the site went down.

As for what actually happened? lol df got v&. Well, kinda. The datacenter did get v&, but not because of df's server. Apparently one of the clients was doing something WORSE than df.. How that is possible is beyond me. Either way, the majority of servers were back online in a matter of hours, but since df is not technically a client, they forgot about us :( Anyways, it was partially my fault it was down this long because I didn't have the IRC address on the site, and the sponsor didn't know which server was mine :(

Anyways, the site slowly awakens from hibernation, given more time to live. Whether the site will be around for another 2 years is beyond me (btw happy 2nd birthday deadfrog), but at least it's back up for now. Me and the host are sharpening up communication where communication failed this time to avoid something like this from happening. Obviously, actual clients didn't have it so hard, but df is not technically a client :)

So once again, huge apology to ServerFlo, Inc. Please do not let anything I said affect any decision you may be making regarding buying from them, this was not really anybody's fault, neither of us knew how to get in touch with each other, that was the main problem.
registration broken
posted by token, 2006-12-17
Don't sign up until I append something to this news post saying the problem is fixed, apparently PHP wants to be a complete cunt. You wont be able to confirm your registration, so your account will sit in waste. I have no ETA on when I can get it fixed, it seems to be one of those damn 'slippery' problems

EDIT: Fixed. It has been over a goddamn week, and does anyone want to know what caused the mail to be broken for so long? Well, besides running debuggers and farming the code for *ANYTHING* that could cause the problem, PHP (this makes me glad I'm leaving it) didn't tell me something so goddamn simple that could have had this fixed the first day: the goddamn sendmail executable wasn't even there! PHP was looking in /usr/bin, but for some reason, apparently something changed, either PHP decided to start looking there or sendmail decided to move somewhere else, or maybe it was just a symlink that got clobbered.. Either way, you'd think that reporting the goddamn program you're trying to run isn't even there would be a simple task, now wouldn't it? I mean, I proved that sendmail worked and ran, but PHP didn't feel like telling me that it was looking in the wrong directory. Now I admit it was quite stupid to NOT check the obvious first, but isn't technology at a point now where a simple 'program not found' error should fucking be reported? I mean, come on, I figured of all of the errors PHP can report, some cryptic, some not, a PROGRAM NOT FOUND error goes missed? What a waste of my time :\

either way, I'm wiping out all registrations after the date the mail problem started (with the exceptions of manually approved ones), so just reregister and happy torrenting.

posted by token, 2006-12-06
If you've signed up in the last day and couldn't confirm, go ahead and confirm now. I forgot to add the new public class to the confirmation page (woops!). It's fixed now :)

edit: Your admin is retarded.. It's actually fixed this time :\

By the way, for the aspiring torrent site operators, I am working on adding some stuff to the code before I go ahead and release it under the GPL in a few months. I want people to be able to run an installer script and have a fully functional XBT frontend. I spent so much time trying to find an XBT frontend that worked excellent, and eventually gave up, none existed, and the situation may be the same still. Either way, Frogface may not be the most feature rich torrent site script out there, but it is relatively bug free, rock solid, stable, efficient, and was designed to be easy to extend. Since the site will be switching away from PHP, I can't just let this hard work go to waste, and figure the community can benefit from it. I'm extremely excited to see how people will use it.
reliability
posted by token, 2006-11-28
I hope to have the reliability issues sorted out by the weekend. It seems that even though the routing problem is fixed, now the HTTPd server keeps crashing. I have the HTTPd out of background mode and hopefully it'll tell me something meaningful next time it crashes. Cross your fingers, I wanna remove the slash from 'reliably' sometime soon :)

ADDED: I've gotten a few E-Mails in the last few days asking how to donate.. I guess I never explained it clearly before. The ad and donation buttons are gone since the site runs on a sponsored server (thanks again <a href="http://www.serverflo.com" tagret="_blank">serverflo</a>). Since I never wanted to deal with a money aspect of the site to begin with (I fucking hate relying on donations, this is a damn hobby site..), I'm extremely glad to not have to deal with money anymore related to the site. I don't want to make money on this site, and I don't want to lose money. I wanted to break even, and having the server sponsored does exactly that without forcing ads down your throat :)
well damn
posted by token, 2006-11-20
I've been doing some research for v4, and am finding out that theres going to have to be some significant changes to the site backend to do what I want to do.. The problem was that I thought it'd be a good idea to get v3 done so I could drop features in afterwards, but a big problem is that even though it was designed to be infinitely extendable, the fatal flaw is the tracker. The problem is that the 'revolutionary' features are going to rely on ratios for part of the althogram.. As I'm researching it more, XBTT requires registration for ratio tracking.. Forcing registration for downloads is one flaw in most sites that inspired me to start Deadfrog, so that's not going to happen. Most of v4's new features are going to be optional, meaning you can opt-in to benefit from them or not.. Theres a reason I keep the site opened up the way I do, it's because I hate closed off systems that force registration and features you might not want down your throat. I'm going to look into options, but I think that building a tracker from scratch is going to be the only real solution. Obviously will set v4 back a ways, so once again the v3 feature freeze is lifted. I have some smaller new things planned until v4's launch, nothing great, but new nonetheless.. Expect something noticable by Christmas :)
more stuff
posted by token, 2006-11-06
Work continues on the site now that the feature freeze is lifted. You won't notice too much happening until next month, because all of the 'experimental' stuff is being worked on using a super secret server that you may or may not be able to find a link to via the forums, but you didn't hear it from me ;)

EDIT: Okay, df3 development has stopped.. Can you believe it? I know, be very very mad.. Now be happy, because the developer guy who wrote v3 mostly by himself wants to do v4 now.. So it'd be quite pointless to work on features with v4 on the way, since it won't be PHP based anymore.. As always, the source code of DF3 will be made public when the site switches to its new code sometime soon.. You should keep in mind that df3 was 'soon' for about 6 months though. and df4 has no set date.. Hell, no set estimate.. Nothing concrete, not even the a feature list :)

SORRY ABOUT THE DOWNTIME, the main switch in the datacenter the site is hosted in took a crap on itself and decided to corrupt its config files, knocking the site offline.. It's all better now :)
sorry about the last news post

I was drunk.. Anyways, the feature freeze will be lifted in a few days, I plan to add some new fun features (after I fix some more stray bugs floating around in the code) and whatnot.. Oh, and if you notice any strange shit, email me (link at bottom of page).. Afterall, the site is on a <a href="http://sakura.deadfrog.us/cpu">new server</a> now (holy shit I can't believe I actually was able to pull it off). Uploads are reenabled, so upload shit.. Tracker is up and running (stats are gonna be fucked for a few days, nothing I can do about that, its a result of switching IP addresses and people's internet providers being cheap by only updating their IP list once every few days. Deadfrog isn't dead (yet), theres still some life left in it. There's still a lot of shit to do to finish the move, but what the hell? The site is up, so whatever..

NOT RELATED BUT WORTH NOTING: A forum dweller made a radio stream for the site <a href="http://l337a.ifastnet.com/">here</a>, it's not of DFR caliber, but come on now, what is? :P

Oh, and email broke again! It was broken for a few days, I restarted it but a lot of E-Mail is getting rejected still.. I manually approved a buttload of accounts yet again, so go ahead and log in.

speed bump ahead, use caution
posted by token, 2006-10-20
I'm a bit pissed off now, why? Well, since today is the day I ideally wanted the new server to be appearing online, I guess it's time to face reality and give an update on where the site is heading, and where it will end up.
The site will be moving to a new server next month. The server I speak of is my 500mhz celeron computer sitting next to me right now. This is a massive downgrade, from over 10000 bogomips to only 1000. Not only that, but the site pushes an average of 2500k/s, whereas my home network is only capable of 300k/s. Theres going to be some very large problems forthcoming. I am working to offset these problems (i should just stubbornly note that donating would have avoided this) by ironing out people with home servers to host chunks of the site, donating resources for the month. However, no matter how much I try to offset it all, the fact still remains that the site is going to turn into molasses next month. Since you retards didn't donate and are forcing me to take this measure, I at least expect you to do your part to not rape my dsl connection and to help the site come back to life when I move it back to a real server, thats the least you can do.

The goal was to get the site switched cleanly over to a new dedicated server that was cheaper than the old one, significantly cheaper.. However, there are setup costs that need to be paid. The google money should come through by the end of November which will pay for the new server and support it 100% from now on (i should note again, since this is important, that this could have been avoided). After things settle, I will begin working on the site yet again (feature freeze being lifted). I would have lifted it already if I didn't have this shit to deal with, but whatever, too late now.

Thanks for making things difficult! For those who actually did donate, thank you, but sorry that everyone else sucked and made it pretty much pointless. Just deal with the speed bump and fuck you if you don't like it (unless you donated, then I apologize for the shitty speed to come). While there is still time to donate, I am done begging and pleading to keep this place running, and the donate button is going to disappear when I'm sober enough to ssh in and delete it (sometime tomorrow probably). I love this place, but it sure does piss me off sometimes
trying to put priority on this
posted by token, 2006-10-16
I've felt like an extortionist for the last few months with all of these ridiculous donation goals and begging.. But theres a master plan to it all. I wanted to get the new server online by the 20th (which wont happen) to have time to set it up.. Why a new server? Well, I want to dump this server, which is costing a few hundred a month, and replace it with another capable server, at a hundred flat.. This means I may only have to ask for donations IF the google ad doesn't make enough for a payout.. The site will become self paid, which will be better for all of us (especially since I've been mega fucking busy with my freelancing lately).. I'm dropping the server at the end of the month whether the donation goal is met or not, as I will not pay another month for it (it's way too expensive).. If the goal isn't met in the next few days, the site will be moving to my home network.. While the site uses an average of 1500k/s, my home network only has 300k/s, so obviously this would be very bad for the site.. The money situation needs dealt with, and unfortunately, this is the only way I can see doing it.. It's a bit of a hump to get over, but in the end, the site will begin paying for itself, which has been a dream of mine since I started it. I love the site a lot, but it is an expensive hobby. With these pieces in place, the site can pay for itself, and I wont have to deal with the financial aspect of it anymore (YAY!). This master plan has been to get a good amount saved up before I set the site free, as a bit of a safeguard against more problems soon.. My goal is to have the donation system completely removed by 2007, possibly next month (depending on donations this month).. I ask this a lot, but this is the home stretch, the pieces are in place! If you've been with the site a while, then you know I hate donation systems, I really really do... This is why I'm doing this, because I FINALLY can! The site is big enough to pay for itself, and I'm very proud of how things have turned out, theres just this one last hill that needs dealt with
whats the deal?
posted by token, 2006-10-08
The donation amount on the top was changed because the site will be switching servers (hopefully this month, depending on donations), the price will drop to $100 a month, which will most likely be covered by the ad (hence, why the ad is now bigger).. Could this be the last of donation begging? I'm pessimistic, and I bet something horrible goes wrong with the server next month.. I hope not, but that's just how I've become these days, and why shouldn't I? I remember the first time I begged for donations, it was to move the site to a dedicated server because my DSL line could no longer hold the site.. I have always hated begging for donations, but it just seems to never stop anymore.. Hopefully cheapening the site will fix this, and I can rid myself of the donation button (which fucks up the layout of the site, btw)
just do it (r)

Thanks everyone for the E-Mails about cheaper hosting, I have a lot of places to consider.. I found some very cheap pipes, and reviews of some of them are excellent. The ideal place for the site is not taking applications right now, so I will probably take a lower tier server with sssinc for a while.. I'll be able to do away with donation drives soon enough, but that means I have to make the ad bigger.. Especially since the place I'm looking at has a high setup fee (may need to beg for donations once more when they start accepting applications).. More info soon.

cheapening this damn place
posted by token, 2006-09-25
This damn server isn't needed anymore. This (more expensive) server was initially a crutch.. Deadfrog v2 was very inefficient (I've said that many times), and this server was leased due to v2 raping the old server.. However, v3 is a lot more efficient, and system load went down when v3 launched, despite traffic rising quite a bit. Overall, load averages on this box have been around 0.3 (vs 0.9 with v2, and 12-ish on the old box).. Simply put, I need to cheapen the hell out of the cost of running this place to try to get it completely covered by the ad instead of this treadmill of begging for donations. I will most likely stay with <a href="http://sssinc-hosting.com">sssinc</a>, as they have been very very good to me (say deadfrog sent you, so I can score some brownie points!). However, I want to get a realistic grasp on the competition and see how much cheaper things are.. This site + shared hosting = not a good match, so please don't talk about someone like dreamhost (they suck, btw), or any other shared package, they always get anal about bittorrent trackers and cpu intensive stuff. I'm talking more about dedicated servers, leasing, with monthly bandwidth caps around 1tb-ish+ (site is right around there, dont think I'll need breathing room).. The criteria is that it has to be at or below $100, has to be at least 10mbit burstable, and has to have at least 1gb of ram.. Processor has to be above 2ghz, Pentium4 is preferred (It's not like I'll get a xeon/opteron at that price). It also has to be a Linux server. For a comparable server with sssinc, I could get it at around $100-ish no problem, but they are mostly on backorder for now, so while I ask them when to expect a downgrage, I might as well get some opinions. <a href="mailto:tokenz@gmail.com">email me</a>, but put 'deadfrog' in the subject line somewhere so I don't miss it. If you know of a place in those requirements, hook me up with some links so I can window shop and cheapen this site/stop freaking out at the end of the month/focus on the site itself instead of the money situation/buy children with my money/joke around/no seriously, that was a joke/or was it?/yes, it was/maybe/okay, this is stupid/yeah, I know/I'll stop now.
I love this site, but...
posted by token, 2006-09-14
I love this site, but unfortunately, you guys are on your own for the month in terms of paying for it. My brother is coming home from Iraq for a few weeks (YAY!) and I will probably be spending the money I'd normally be using to help pay for the site on things like beer, beer, and... uhh, beer.. Maybe a few bowls and whatnot here and there, but the point is beer.. And that I won't be covering the site this month at all (which is why I am announcing it early!). Donating is always good (but please let me know who you are so I can credit you, amazon doesn't tell me unless you tell it to!), but since the site is obviously a money pit, buying an ad might be more worthwhile.. Albeit less helpful for this month (but it looks like google wont cover next month at all yet again)... In all honesty, the site is in reality about $300 a month to run (I cover what I can, Google covers a bit, and donations get the rest.. Google is sending $103, so.. about $200 is needed.. Have at it!).. There's also a paypal address for people who cannot use amazon, the address for that is d-e-a-d-f-r-o-g@animesoup.com (without the dashes, just one word).. In summary, the normal $100 I usually throw at the site is going to be spent on BEER, so you guys have to pick up the slack. I know it sucks that I like spending time with my family more than the site, and a broke man like myself has to make those decisions.

The "total collected" amount on amazon is at $1,014.80 right now, which means it needs to be at around $1,214.80-ish by the 24th (amazon's counter is live, so more accurate). Theres fees deducted and whatnot, and I'm not in the mood to do the math (I just quit smoking, so I'm testy). Anyways, I bid you luck in getting that goal met, and I apologize if I am coming off as a prick (damnit I want some nicotine).
lol brb surgery
posted by token, 2006-09-07
Actually, surgery isn't gonna happen (yet).. However, I've been scheduled to swallow a mini camera with a little connector through my abdomen to a hardrive that'll be strapped to me. Anyways, I figure that the thing will be easy to hack, so I want you to send me pictures to put on the camera's harddrive. Get an account on the forum and attach some strange/disturbing/arousing pictures, or post them to an image hosting site and link to them.. Either way, I need some pictures to put on the harddrive. I'll be wired up on the 11th (I didn't want to do it on the 11th, but apparently thats the only day they'll have avail for the next month... Are people really that paranoid about having procedures done on 9/11?), so thats the deadline. After that, I have a CAT scan, if anyone knows how to make it so the cat scan reflects 'sup doc', please tell me, I'd love to fuck with the doctors as much as I can. Life is short (and since I'm already having to do shit that people usually don't have to do until their 40s, I'd guess mine will be shorter!), so why not live like it? I await your submissions.

feature freeze is getting lifted!
posted by token, 2006-09-07
Feature freeze will be lifted the 2nd week of October, and I have some fun stuff planned. I initially wanted to wait to get the control panel *complete* before I put it up, but I'm going to do a basic CP so I can get the seed notifier working, which is still high priority on the to-do list. After that, I want to play around with the theme engine to make it easier to adjust. While the look of the site is ugly, theres going to be a rather cool new piece to it (along with new templates, also waiting on the CP for that).. You may be thinking, "oh yay, more crappy templates", but if you've been with the site for a while, you know that I don't do things traditionally.. The new template engine is going to be, quite simply, fucking amazing. It's going to be a custom shared system.. While that sounds like retarded nerd speak, it basically means that how the site looks is going to be heavily controlled by the users, or, completely controlled by the user, depending on what you want to do with it. Everyone can change it to their liking, and everyone's changes can be seen/applied by any other user. Theres a few hurdles to this approach, but I think it'll be extremely cool once it's finished. The v3 code base was almost a year late because I was trying to keep it extremely open to do some amazing things to it later on, and this is the type of stuff I'm talking about.

After the feature freeze is done with and I get seed notification to the point where it can be used, there will be a mass mailing informing people of it in full detail, encouraging them to set it to their liking. I also want to get a PM system built in (probably ajax based, depending on whether the person trying to be contacted is online or not), but that comes later.. Anyways, hope you're not all pissed off because of the feature freeze, I've been brainstorming a lot, and I think you're going to like what you see after the freeze is lifted.

THIS IS THE BEST SONG EVER
posted by token, 2006-08-28
As for the last news post, I have a decent enough comp now (this one is 'designed for windows 98' instead of 'windows 95', so... meh)

Anyways, download <a href="http://music.deadfrog.us/thepoweroflove.ogg">this song</a>... Songs like this are why the internet is so great.. Be careful, though, you don't want to fill up the tubes with this and delay the senator's internet!

It can't be pinku (That's japanese for "pink")...

Actually, in all seriousness, I'm really hurting with this piece of shit iPaq as my main desktop computer. No, I'm not looking for handouts or bugging for money. Let's face it, eBay isn't what it used to be, it's *rare* to find a person selling off their old hardware. What I'm looking for is some cheap parts from people who aren't using them anymore. I definitely need an ATX power supply, I need a video card (I do't care if it's zOMG FAST!!!1), and a motherboard with a processor, preferably, something with an AMD chip somewhere around or above 1ghz. I'm not picky about the specifics, but ideally, thats what I'm looking for. I have ram and harddrives and all that crap. If you have any of that stuff and want to get rid of it, I'd be happy to buy it from you so I can (hopefully) put my crappy iPaq desktop back in the closet where it belongs. <a href="mailto:token@animesoup.com">Email me</a> what you have (start the subject with "i like pie:", I'm averaging about 200 spam messages a day now.. Also, CC it to tokenz@gmail.com too), and how much you want for it. Obviously, I'm extremely broke, so don't offer me new stuff for $200, I'm just trying to get things as back to normal as I can for as cheap as I can so I can get back to working on the site (THIS PIECE OF SHIT IPAQ CANNOT MULTITASK VERY WELL). I don't care about PCIe or SATA or any of the new crap.. I'm looking to spend about $50 for all of the stuff I listed above, to give you an understanding of how broke I am/what you should offer. I know some people out there don't care about old parts and are willing to sell them cheap, but eBay is so damn flooded with "zOMG NEW!!1 STILL IN BOXKCS!11" shit that its impossible to find the stuff I'm looking for.
Meh...

Thanks all who donated, seriously.. Very damn helpful to know that if I run dry, the very people who use the site can pick up the slack.. While this isn't what the news post is about, I still needed to thank you.

Anyways, now to the point. Since I haven't done dick with the site in a long time (and don't really have the resources to do so right now), I figured I'd branch off a bit. I'm disappointed to present to you, <a href="http://img.deadfrog.us" target="_newtab">/df/chan</a>! While it's not my first imageboard, it's the first I actually put any effort into (although theres probably still a few glitches, which are probably my fault).. Go use it so I can iron out the glitches. Go bitch on <a href="http://board.deadfrog.us">the forums</a> if something is broken.

And now, a poem about donating.<center>
*EHEM*

Here I sit, yet again
Shit won't meet, at the ends
The site is in jeopardy, yet again
So I call on you, the site's friends.
August 24th, is when the bill is due
Or else the site will die, you too!
So if you can, spare some change
Right now you must think I'm deranged
However it may be, as true as it is
This site, you see, is far from a biz
A work of art, a piece of shit
Whatever it is, I love every megabit.
Help out the frog, the toad, the thing
Because next you'll be forced, to hear me sing
"Please oh please, send some cash
I'm really itchy down there, some stupid rash"
I have something lined up, a better job
So I don't have to keep eating Corn on the cob
The place looking good, being DirecTV
Either that, or a cable company
As stupid as it is, I need you again
Please donate, Deadfrog's friends

</center>By the way, I'm not black. Anyways, since people ask every time, the amount listed on amazon is every payment EVER made to the site, so it's not like I'm buying new rims for my shitty car (I already told you I wasn't really black). On an unrelated note anyways, the same day I put up the "I'm black" bulletin, traffic surged, broke a new traffic record, actually... Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm Italian :)

<B>ADDED:[/b] Hey, cool, $86 in less than 24 hours.. If I would have known poetry worked that well, I would have begged in poetic poem more often! Still, you guys, theres a bit to go. So donate a few more bucks, and I'll love you so.. Okay, this is strange, a poetic admin, please dont make me do this again.. Oh shit, I can't stop, this poetry is corrupting me, taking away my non-existant dignity. I'll click 'go' to the edit, so I can stop, this poetry is rediculous, but it's better than doo-wop.<BR>Although <a href="http://board.deadfrog.us/index.php?topic=1554.msg8674">some</a> people don't like it, but that person uses AOL, so what does he know?

I'm not a religious man by any stretch of the imagination, but there are times when I at least have to question what happens when someone dies. The only thing keeping me from declaring myself athiest is the fact that every memory I have, everything I do isn't just going to 'disappear' when I die. I surely don't know where it goes, but I know, deep in my soul, that it goes somewhere. I hope your memories are safe, and that your soul will meet up with Grandpa. Rest in peace, Bonnita "Grammy" Topper. We're still on for lunch on Wednesday, even if it's not this Wednesday.
downtime planned?
posted by token, 2006-08-14
I will be performing some routine maintainance at about 2am EDT on August 14. This may cause some problems (today's upgrades have caused me grief so far). The database software and HTTP software are in need of an update, so I will be doing those. Normally, those updates don't cause too many problems, but after 2 out of 2 routine upgrades broke things pretty badly today, I expect nothing but grief from the server software also. *IF* things go down, they could be down for up to an hour (I try to overestimate, though). Expect me to be pissed off if the site goes down.

ADDED: Holy shit, nearly flawless.. Only about 5 minutes of downtime (my fault, libc still wasn't entirely fixed from earlier)... Anyways, moo.
the first rule of deadfrog is...

I miss making newsposts that don't have any relevance to what's going on.. Even though theres a lot of shit happening, I won't post it here (protip: if you care, check the forums for one of my rants... But I'm sure you don't, since I don't even care myself). However, it has come to my attention that there are a lot of new members here. Traffic is rising, up to about 80,000 pageviews a day... Which means that some of the rules are being broken.. Rule number one is WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT DEADFROG. Rule number two is WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT DEADFROG. By the way, I make soap for a living and live in an abandoned house...
<font size=1>Spoiler: At the end of the movie, I find out that Tyler Durden doesn't really exist.</font>

While I'd love to talk about how the feature freeze is still in effect, I won't go into detail about it.. This newspost is simply to mention that Fight Club is a fucked up movie (go rent/download it).. Random enough news post for you? I hope so.

So my bank told me for every day my bank account is overdrawn, they'll "charged" me $2 a day. I'm waiting for google to put the check in there, and took an $80 loan to stop the charges. Not important, though, since the bill should get paid on time, there will be plenty to get that paid off, I just wanted to share the fact that my bank told me they're going to "charged" me. The actual quote is "Please be advised that on the eleventh day, a $2.00 per day overdraft charged will be accessed on the account".. Okay, is it just me, or should I be scared to know that these are the rednecks in charged of my money (haw haw see wut i did thar?). Yeah, I'll probably switch banks next month.

Well, I guess I got lucky this month. If google wasn't going to come through with a 2 month payout, I'd have to beg for donations, but OH WAIT, amazon's payment system is fucked up. I've seen a few donations coming in this month, and I thank you.. However, this month is completely covered by the ad monies, so it won't have an immediate impact. I'd update the 'current amount', but amazon is messed up, my bank is messed up, and I don't want to give a total amount until I know whats up with those. I do know that the bill will get paid this month whenever Google decides to send the ad money, but just because the 'total amount' says $18 or whatever doesn't mean its updated. Hold off on donations, at least until this thing with amazon is sorted out (they told me they have no idea when it'll be fixed)..

And I know this is stupid, but it is the only reason I wanted to make a new newspost in the first place.. While it's extremely stupid, I am happy to say that on August 3, Deadfrog will celebrate 150 days of uptime.. I know, its stupid, but looking back on how unstable things used to be, it's amazing that it's finally able to go more than a week without needing *some* form of kick in the ass... Although the tracker was upgraded about a month ago, so thats only at 36 days of uptime, but still!
im kinda present

I am somewhat present, moderating and whatnot.. I've been geeking out at my mother's computer for now until I get a few thousand dollars to fix the wiring to my computer room... Oh, I didn't tell you about that... Yeah, its not the processor or the motherboard, its the wiring, everything in the room fried completely, including the surge protectors.. And my two precious computers... And stereo... Damnit.. The wires are charred, guess it could have been worse.. One of the DNS servers was hosted on one of the computers in that room, so you may get some longer than normal response times from the site.. Anyways, when I get back, I'll start working on image verification to get rid of the spam bots, fucking spam faggots pushing their viagra and gay ringtones that nobody gives a fuck about... And I'll do a Deadfrog Radio as soon as possible... If I don't turn emo first... Anyways, I'm kinda here, hollar for me on the forums if you need anything.

added: but at least my <a href="http://video.deadfrog.us/runs.avi">car is running again</a>, so yay.

also added: any carheads out there know why my car keeps doing a strange tachometer dance? If I let off the gas at about 45-60mph, the tachometer will drop down to about 500rpm, then fly back up... slowly drop back down, fly back up... Until I get to about 30mph, then it seems to stop... Anyone? I suspect a misaligned TPS, but maybe someone who knows what they're doing can <a href="mailto:iloveboobs@animesoup.com">give me some advice?</a> Oh, and if I let it idle for 5 minutes after driving it enough for it to warm up, the check engine light comes on, but if I rev it to 2800rpm, it goes off...? Anyways, I have many more things to bombard you with if you offer to help, so... Actually, don't bother, you'll regret trying to help me fix my car.. You'll get a complete list of things wrong with it.. But act now, and get a second list, absolutely FREE! You must act now to get in on this special offer![/corny announcer voice]
I'm out for a while
posted by token, 2006-07-02
Well, I had a feeling this would happen. My comp has been running extremely hot for a while now, the processor usually at 150f. Since I don't have air conditioning (and can't get it due to the horribleness of the wiring of the house, which will cost a few grand to fix), (what I believe is) the processor died. When I power on the machine, the PC speaker emits a low groaning sound in conjunction with the fan, and nothing happens. The processor smells HORRIBLE, so I suspect its that.. Imagine burning hair multiplied by 8,000.. When I sniff it, the smell stays in my nose for about 5 minutes, and some brown juice is coming out of it. Although the other symptoms are motherboard-ish (the power light doesnt turn on, although the harddrive light does), I suspect processor, or multiple things... Power supply could also be a culprit, since it's about 4 years old and makes a whining sound all the time. Normally at this point, I'd start talking about how I'm so broke and would like some help, but I'm not doing that again. You guys have bailed me out of shitholes so many times, and at this point, I am refusing to ask for your help. This newspost is just to announce that progress on the site is frozen until further notice. If there are copyright issues or whatnot, please talk to nhjm or demi in the chatroom, they are the only other people with access to the site. When I get enough money to fix my system, I'll be back. I'm not going to do anything about my situation until I get a better job, since that's really the true fix for this whole problem. No more bandaids, you guys. Wish me luck in my voyage of no computer until further notice, and please keep all of the good torrents seeded until I get back (although you bastards should be doing that anyways).. Until then, see ya

I'm happy to report that Deadfrog is going to be up for at least 2 more months. The donations came pouring in this month, and the google ad covers next month's money. By that time, I should have something better secured job-wise. Thanks a million you guys.

Second, I'm serious about the 'quarter per person' campaign. I will put up a new page describing more about it. I have all sorts of strange hobbies/ideas, but considering Deadfrog happens to be one of my strange offshoots I never expected to work, I have a bit more faith in the quarter project. I'll update you all once I get the page up. I have ideas like this every day, most of them are ones I don't have money to get off the ground, this one is possible, so I must at least give it a shot.
it begins
posted by token, 2006-06-20
One of the servers is being taken offline today due to lack of funding (it was just a backup box, so its not a huge deal). There are 6 days to get the main server paid for, or the site is going to hit a major speed bump. Next month, the google ad is going to generate a massive 2 month payout, so the site should be fine by then (I hope) and after that, I'll have a better job (again, I hope). If you can help out this month, please do. You can go through amazon, or if you want, <a href="mailto:token@animesoup.com">email me</a> for paypal info. If you can, please help. My car is getting (what i hope is) the last part it needs to be a reliable car, so I can finally get a better job. This should be the last time I have to bug you people, and hopefully, I can do away with donations completely next month. You can see on the donation page that you guys have helped out a lot in need, let's see if we can do it one more time. 6 days until we know for sure.

Edit: I had an interesting idea for a donation campaign. Although it wont be quick enough to work this month, it might work in the future. If each user of the site for one day donated a single penny, the site would survive for 2 months by itself. Extending that idea, what about a quarter? So, if you want to donate, stick a quarter in an envelope and mail it to:

Robert Santon

2848 State Rd

Rock Creek, OH, 44084

USA
Please don't stalk me.. But anyways, most people have at least a quarter, and if most people sent one in, that'd be quite a sum of money to help keep the site running. Put a return address and I'll credit everyone who does it. If you want to remain anonymous, stick a smiley face by your return address and I'll credit you as 'anonymous'. That might be a lot of typing, but I'm very hopeful that the idea could work. I won't know unless I try it.. Stick with US quarters (coinstar hates non-US money, and so do banks around here).. And please, please, PLEASE, do NOT come to my house to meet me or send me anthrax.. Well, the first rule can be broken if you want to share a fatty (that you're providing)
today was productive!
posted by token, 2006-06-13
Well, I fixed some of the annoyances I've had with the site today. I reworked the chat page, put initial hooks into the control panel, and further adapted the site to the restructuring changes I did with the server. I have a few ambitious goals with the site in the next few days. I don't want to mention them here, because it might get your hopes up, only to realize that I still suck too much to actually get them done (this happened in the past multiple times). Anyways, keep an eye on the site, theres still more to come :)

And someone asked what the situation was with money.. It's hard to update the 'current amount' reading because amazon doesn't really do a good job at telling me realistically what to expect.. Money is still needed, but as I stated earlier, the site wont die (it'll just become reeeeeeally slow when I put it on my DSL line, worst case scenario)
Errrrr
posted by token, 2006-06-08
This month is going to be tricky. I thought things with the site were somewhat back on track, so I went ahead and had my car taken to the shop, hoping to get it fixed so I can get a better job (and not have to worry too much about the site money anymore). Probably going to be a few hundred dollars of repair. Well, last month was the first month Google ads didn't earn enough to generate a payout (it's always been close). Anyways, there are now two options. Donate to help keep the site fast, or I'll have to move it to my DSL connection on my 500mhz box. The speed will be cut to about 5% of what it is right now.. Hopefully, depending on how much my car will cost to fix (waiting on the estimate), things will stablize. I really hope this is just one month I have to worry about, and that this is going to be it, no more begging, enough money from my job to never have to bug you people again. Either way, I have a plan for the site. Donate if you can, but if enough doesnt come in, whatever..

NEW: I restructured the server a bit, due to the fact that it had 1 and a half years of "I'll just throw this over here" clutter that went uncleaned since birth. I sorted stuff into subdomains. If you have problems accessing certain subdomains, give it a few hours and try again, your ISP might not have the new DNS records yet. If you run into other problems (404 errors and likewise), please report it on the forums or to my email, <a href="mailto:token@animesoup.com">token@animesoup.com</a>. The changes wont benefit anyone but me (and maybe the other developer), it'll make backing up easier, and mirroring the site (if I ever get out of money hell) will also be easy to do now.... Or moving it to another server if I run out of money.. Either way, report broken shit (if it exists.. and I'm sure it does)

First of all, once again, please donate. Scenario #1, donations come in, and bill gets paid off no problem. Scenario #2, bill gets paid, but more NSF fees charged, putting the site in debt (emergency) status again. No fun. If you got some spare cash, please help out. I really don't want to sell my asshole to some guy named bubba to pay off next month's bill, but it's looking like that might be the scenario.. If the goal isnt met, please inquire to <a href="token@animesoup.com">token@animesoup.com</a> about rates I charge to get up in my ass (???????).<Br>added: The site (and my ass) is safe for another month (just in time too, I got an overdue notice basically at the same time I initiated the transfer). Thanks again. If you want your name on the donator list, E-Mail me, I'll be glad to add it :)

On a lighter note, there is a section of the forum I really don't want to delete, because it's very unique, but it's dying/dead. Basically, its a part of the forum where everyone has mod-like powers. You can edit people's posts, split posts, forge posts, etc... No account required (in fact, it's recommended you do stuff as a guest so it doesn't show up under who edited the post). It's an odd concept, and I want to give that concept a complete evaluation, an experiment if you will.. You can find it <a href="http://www.deadfrog.us/board/index.php?board=23.0">here</a>.
Good news!
